What our clients say
Bring Your Own Device
Recent years have seen an interesting stage in technology evolution: it marks the first time that, for most of us, our personal tech is better than our work tech. For much of the last decade, an employer offering a mobile phone and laptop was viewed positively. Now, many employees would prefer to use their own smartphone and tablet PC in the workplace.
This is called “bring your own device” (BYOD). It seems to be a compelling proposition to companies for three reasons: firstly, employees are offering to do more work, in their own time, and at their own expense; secondly, they will find this motivating and it will be a factor in employer selection; and thirdly, the company will be spared the burden of providing the hardware to the employee. Yet despite this, many organisations are unwilling to provide this service. Why? Because the clear benefits are offset by the fear that they will lose control and that information security will suffer.
What if they don’t have a passcode enabled and leave their device at Starbucks? What if they’re logging into your CRM over an insecure wireless network at the airport? |
As smartphones and tablets proliferate on your networks, you need to be able to say “Yes” to the benefits of such devices without compromising your security.
The Challenges
New demands will be placed on your network bandwidth as the number of devices increase. |
|
Web site filtering, spam filtering, data leak protection and application control technologies will become even more important as information is transferred to and from each user’s individual device. |
|
Wi-Fi technology will need to be tightly integrated into your security infrastructure. |
|
Networks will need to be segmented so that guest devices are not allowed on your production network. |
|
Authentication and encryption techniques may need to be extended to mobile devices. |
